Technofiction Overview of Source Code (2011)

This story is told through the eyes of Cpt. Colter Stevens, and it is a strange story, indeed. He awakens in your body of the different man, on the Chicago-bound commuter train, and eight minutes later experiences a bomb blast which blows him and the train to bits. He then repeats this experience, over and over. He discovers his mission would be to figure out who set the bomb, and why the Sam Hill he's here in this different body! Before this weirdness began he'd been a helicopter pilot flying a combat mission in Afghanistan.

His condition is steadily revealed as he keeps returning into this to try to solve the mystery. Ultimately he solves both mysteries, falls in love with the beautiful woman on the train, and there is a contented twist at the conclusion.

The director, Duncan Jones, also did "Moon" a film I quite enjoyed too. I'm pleased to see he's keeping up the good work.

This is the good news. Here are the technofiction flaws I saw:

o The first problem I noticed could be that the bomber managed to tote a 50-70 pound bomb made up of dozens of separate parts into the train restroom and smoosh up the ventilator panel and into a stable place available online for above the ceiling without anyone else on the train taking notice. He's a powerful, agile boy, indeed!

o The second problem was that because the story unfolds it might be more and more plot deviceish. You will find there's bomber who's likely to not only blow up this train, but inflate Chicago too, and somehow the authorities discover that this train bomb is simply a prelude....Wow! That's asking a great deal.

Asking much more: This is being carried out by just one individual! He will build, deposit, and set off both devices. MacGyver on steroids!

All of the above appears to be unfolded just to give some urgency for this story.

o Somehow... out of this devastating carnage of the train wreck. The top-secret military people choose a passenger brain that's still alive enough that they'll transfer full sensory images to Cpt. Stevens' mind. Plus they do that within minutes of the wreck happening since the clock is ticking on "the big one" still coming.

There's never a cop around if you want one, but there's a super-secret military agency johnny-on-the-spot when you need a film plot device.

o For some reason having Stevens practice several times, and know very well what his condition is, isn't going to work. The story informs us this key outfit continues to be waiting patiently for a disaster of this sort so that they could test their new creation, so there is plenty of time to obtain Stevens acclimated when they have chosen to do this.

o At one point the military tells Stevens that the blast was deliberately timed to go off when the commuter train was passing a freight train. The military people imply the bomber was watching to do this, which means the bomber was following the train in the car and capable of seeing if this happened.

...Well, he's already strong and agile enough to get a 50-70 pound bomb in the restroom ventilator, and engineer enough to construct the bomb simply by himself, I guess he can be considered a NASCAR-class driver as well.

o The second bomb, the one the military is attempting desperately to stop, is referred to as a dirty bomb. A dirty bomb is really a conventional bomb with a few radioactive stuff mixed in. It isn't a nuclear bomb and it is less powerful as one. It's a run-of-the-mill car bomb plus some radioactive contamination. It's not going to turn Chicago into rubble, the thing the mad bomber says he's targeting.

o I will not go into detail, however the "who" Cpt. Stevens has effects on as he runs through this scenario again and again is one thing that can take some serious belief suspension, but I will grant that.

So, overall, it is a nice thriller to look at. It's well crafted and the acting, pacing and special effects prosper at supporting the storyline. But the story is a technofiction head-scratcher.

Gnomeo and Juliet Review

Featuring James McAvoy and Emily Blunt as Gnomeo and Juliet, this 2011 family movie is a fun packed, light hearted take on Shakespeare's classic drama Romeo and Juliet.

Occur a suburban neighborhood, the story is set around feuding neighbors Mrs Montague and Mr Capulet who live on the aptly named Verona Street. They are the proud owners of their very own gnome families: the Red and the Blue respectively. Once the gardens are unattended, the gnomes become more active and live the feud between their owners. Gnomeo, a Blue gnome and Juliet, a Red, meet by chance while seeking a nearby run-down uninhabited property. For Gnomeo and Juliet it is love at first sight. The adventurous smitten gnomes, discover and befriend a lonely plastic flamingo held in the abandoned garden shed. Flamingo includes a strikingly similar personality to King Julien XIII from the 2005 animated film "Madagascar." Flamingo is the voice of reason in the movie: believing the hatred of others should not destroy true love. But could their forbidden love overpower the hatred that exists between the Red and also the Blue?

The adventure that unfolds is both entertaining and heart warming, as the gnomes conger up ever increasingly wicked methods to wreak damage to their neighbors. This culminates within the Blues ultimately destroying everything having a gigantic lawnmower, the terrafirminator (created by the voice of Hulk Hogan). Throughout everything, the love between Gnomeo and Juliet endures and ultimately conquers all.

Set to some great soundtrack, Gnomeo and Juliet was fun and toe tapping! Elton John featured strongly in his music and in person: there have been gnomes wearing loud glasses and flamboyant clothing! The wind chimes on the roof had Elton John gnomes playing piano.

The cast seemed to be well chosen, featuring Michael Caine, Patrick Stewart as William Shakespeare, Ozzy Osbourne (an outdoor deer) and many more.

I found Gnomeo and Juliet to become very entertaining! At one hour and 24 minutes it had been just the right length to maintain the kids' attention for the entire movie. Whilst I didn't have high expectations with this Romeo and Juliet remake from an adults perspective, I was pleasantly surprised to experience a fun film for the entire family. It was packed with laughs, specifically for the kids! Fundamentally, the film had a nice message for kids and gives them early contact with English playwright William Shakespeare. The story is clearly aimed at children, but with many jokes and scenes that just the grown ups can understand, it had something for everybody. My kids giggled throughout this movie. Need I say more?

Max Payne Movie Review, Starring Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis

Max Payne (PG-13) Starring Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kuni, Beau Bridges, Ludacris, Chris O'Donnell Director: John Moore Theater Release Date: October 17th, 2008 DVD Release Date: January 20th, 2009 Genre: Action, Crime, Drama, Thriller.

Synopsis: Max Payne is really a maverick cop - a mythic anti-hero - determined to track down those accountable for the brutal murders of his family and partner. Hell-bent on revenge, his obsessive investigation takes him on the nightmare journey into a dark underworld. As the mystery deepens, Max is forced to battle enemies past the natural world and face an unthinkable betrayal.

I'd the typical high expectations starting this movie, as I normally do with any new Wahlberg movie. Having high expectations for a movie can never be good, will it? Being unsure of much about the video game or the plot from the movie helped, as I was going in blind, and that is more often than not the best thing for me.

I was pretty excited to determine Mila Kunis, too. Ever since "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" I have been type of jonesing on her. I'm not quite sure she fit the character, but she did a passible job as the movie lacked the seriousness it needed anyway.

I can not state that Wahlberg did a poor job either, he was his typical self. He's been more of an icon than an actress lately, and his presence alone in an action movie is enough to result in the movie worthwhile.

I had been just a little reclaimed by Beau Bridges. I think this movie could have been better with another person playing his character. I've just never really liked him all that much and i believe he stunk up within this movie. His character really were built with a shot to stand out, and Bridges dropped the ball.

The plot was loose, maybe a little jumbled, and many of the supporting actors were bad. The story tried to sneak on you with a twist in some places, but mostly it had been pretty predictable, using the average "guy lost everything now seeks revenge" theme. That we like. Kind of reminded me of "The Punisher".

There have been minor roles by Ludacris and Chris O'Donnell that were decent at best. You can't really blame the actors for under-performing inside a movie that does not quite draw emotion in the actors, and it has almost zero character development for everybody except Wahlberg.

You probably think I did not like the flick using the way I've been ranting and complaining, but you're wrong. It had been decent. Don't see it in the theater though. It's a good lazy action film to sit down at home and zone watching, as you don't really need to pay real close attention, you can just sit back and enjoy the ride with this one.
